The Driller Assistant performs a wide variety of duties as the assistant to the Well Driller on a two-person drill crew. The primary responsibilities are to assist in the completion of observation wells and test holes in meeting the mission of the Department. Drill work consists of completing test holes and 2-inch diameter observation wells that typically range in depth from 20 feet to 320 feet, with occasional wells completed at greater depths. The drill work is completed throughout the state of North Dakota requiring significant travel during the drilling season that generally occurs from May through October.

Duties and Tasks

Safe operation of a tanker truck (water) and other equipment on and off the drill siteFilling tanker truck with make-up water from surface water or ground water fill sitesKeeping daily inventory of water loads from filling sitesHandling of drill pipe while tripping in or tripping out of boreholeShoveling of drill cuttings from the mud tubMixing drilling fluidAssist in general repairs and maintenance on the drill rig, water truck, crew cab pickup, grouter, air compressors, trailers, small engines, and rig accessoriesAssist in plugging or servicing existing wells

Minimum Qualifications

Successful completion of high school or GEDA valid Class B driver's license with tanker (non-hazardous) air-brake endorsements or ability to acquire within 3 monthsThe ability to drive a tanker truck (water) pulling a 10,000-pound trailer on highways, gravel roads, trails, and off-road to drilling sites and water sourcesMust be able to lift and carry objects that weigh up to 80 pounds; walk on uneven terrain and long distances; stand for long periods of time; work outdoors in inclement weather; wade and work in mud and heavy vegetation; work in and around waterMust be able to work the majority of the time out of town (weekdays only) during drilling season that generally occurs from May through OctoberMechanical skills such as repairing pumps, changing oil, packing wheel bearingsOther general maintenance shop experience

Preferred Qualifications

Experience as a Driller AssistantPossession of ND Well Driller Certification as a Monitoring Well Contractor/Water Well Contractor or equivalent certificate Ability to operate office equipment such as smart phone, computers, copiers, and printers as well as programs such as email, internet, and file management softwareExperience operating shop machinery such as telehandler forklift, skidsteer, front-end loader, etc.Proficient in using various welders, cutting torches, and power toolsProficient in completing paperwork such as inventory sheets, maintenance schedules, reimbursement forms, and timesheets

The individual in this position will perform data collection operations in support of the agency water resource management functions. The Engineering Technician performs a wide variety of duties associated with collecting water samples from various observation wells throughout the state of North Dakota. This position reports to the lead environmental technician.

Duties and Tasks

Extensive weekly travel throughout North Dakota requiring overnight hotel stays. Obtain, document, and submit water samples to the ND Department of Environmental Quality for analysis.Maintain, service, and restock supplies and equipment related to the collection of water samples.Enter field and lab related water chemistry results into the database. Scan all related documents into their respective location.Perform maintenance duties at observation wells such as general clean up, mowing, concrete pad repair or installation.Provide assistance to other technicians with water level measurements, ("well runs") throughout the field season, and assist with other duties as needed.Perform maintenance and service on all equipment related to the job duties including, but not limited to, vehicles, trailers, small engines, water pumps, and electric water level tapes.Mapping well locations that need to be sampled for the upcoming field season, along with navigation of maps based on the Public Land Survey System using townships, ranges, sections, and quarters.Inspect, correct, scan, and enter documents into the database that are being converted from paper files to electronic files. Work with other entities to schedule water sampling for rural water districts.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires successful completion of high school or GED and 4 years or more of relevant experience. To note: College-level course work or a degree in an engineering or related field may be substituted for the required work experience on a year-for-year basis.Experience operating a computer using basic software like email, word processors, spreadsheets, and web browsers.Must possess a valid driver's license and be able and willing to travel during weekdays to include overnight hotel stays.Must be able and willing to work overtime to ensure the required water samples are collected during North Dakota's warmer seasons.Must be able to work in various weather conditions and safely navigate uneven terrain.Ability to safely lift objects weighing up to 60 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous field experience, including inspection, construction observation, or data collection experience.Experience with water sampling procedures.The ability to troubleshoot and overcome problems as they arise.Experience using electrical multimeters to measure current and voltage.Experience using database applications to manage data.
